amuly: (Grab ass Siri)
[personal profile] amuly
Because I am insane/bored/procrastinating packing (I have until next Thursday to pack for a 5 day vacation. Do I seriously need to start now?! Geeze.), I've compiled an analysis of screen shots and dialogue to, um, feed my insanity.

First thing first: PoA v OotP:
Personally, I feel like Cuaron was either totally shipping Sirius/Remus, or, more likely, PoA was meant more to be about the relationship between Sirius and Remus, whereas OotP was meant more to be about the relationship between Sirius and Harry. This then leads to Harry being worse off at the end of OotP for Sirius' death, &c &c.
As a result of this, PoA has a lot more shipping gold than OotP.
Anyway, on with the insanity!

PoA:

I basically only used clips from Shrieking Shack scene for this, simply because there is very little to go off of throughout the rest of the movie. We don't get a lot of conversation w/ Remus about Sirius - this is instead replaced with conversations with Remus about Lily...for whatever reason (fag hag? Just saying...)
So, Shrieking Shack:

Remus: "Well, well, Sirius. Looking rather ragged, aren't we? Finally the flesh reflects the madness within."

Remus' expression doesn't reveal a lot here, possibly a trace of amusement (certainly his tone sounds that way) but otherwise relatively neutral. Of course, this is because we are leading up to the BIG REVEAL.

Sirius: Well you'd know all about the madness within, wouldn't you, Remus?"

Sirius, being all cautiously-snarky.

*cough SUPER GAY cough*

Hugs!

Then we get this bit of dialogue, with Sirius clinging to Remus:
Sirius: I found him.
Remus: I know.
Sirius: He's here!
Remus: I understand.
Sirius: Let's kill him!
Hermione then interrupts at this point.

So with this little bit of dialogue, we have Sirius kind of desperately looking for confirmation/approval from Remus. He recognizes an ally in him, and clings to this fact. Someone believes him! His old friend understands!
Adorableness ^.^

This is their body language throughout Hermione's accusations. Notice that Remus keeps his hand on Sirius' shoulder, placating him, staying on his side. Sirius looks abashed, less confident. An interesting change from the crazed, unstoppable Sirius from earlier. He now has Remus to balance him out, and to take his cues from. Remus is handling the situation, now.

Sirius: Enough talk, Remus, come on! Let's kill him!
Remus: Wait!
Sirius: I did my waiting! Twelve years of it! In Azkaban!

Sirius is desperate, screaming, sad. After Sirius shouts this, Remus looks at him like this:

Dawww~~~
He softens, feels for Sirius, and relents.
Remus: Very well. Kill him. But wait one, more, minute. Harry has a right to know why.

So even though Remus is giving into desperate, sad Sirius, he still maintains some control over Sirius.

Snape: Vengance is sweet. How I hoped I'd be the one to catch you.

Here we see Sirius threatened by Snape, who doesn't understand the situation. So what does Remus do?

Remus: Severus...

Tries to mediate the situation, tries to protect Sirius and explain to Snape what's going on.
Notice how Snape is ready to train his wand on Remus. He's very quick to believe Remus is in league with Sirius. Because of how strong their friendship was, or because Snape knew they were something more...?

Snape: I told Dumbledore you were helping your old friend into the castle and now here's the proof.

Remus gets the wand pointed at him, backs up so he's level with Sirius.

Then we get this mini-monologue from Sirius, which I'm posting here and then following with screencaps, since Remus goes through about three adorable emotions in quick succession while Sirius is speaking.

Sirius: Brilliant, Snape. Once again you've put your keen and penetrating mind to the task, and as usual, come to the wrong conclusion. Now if you'll excuse us, Remus and I have some unfinished business to attend to.

Remus still cautious of Snape...

...Remus realizing that Sirius should probably shut up and going to stop him...

...and Remus not bothering, exasperated, because Sirius is just being Sirius (aka, a twat).

Snape: Give me a reason. I beg you.

Remus jumps forward, trying to stop him and protect Sirius.

Remus: Severus don't be a fool.

Remus shaking his head, trying his best to defuse the situation.

Sirius: He can't help it, it's habit by now.

Sirius raises his eyebrows, all bitchy (well, basically. That's what he's being).

Remus: Sirius, be quiet.

Remus trying to do his best to be all placating, even though it's totally not working. Notice his hands still up, like he wants to either reach out to Sirius or take the wand from Snape.

Sirius: Oh, quiet yourself Remus!

Aaaand Remus gives up. He gives a little exasperated wave, lets his hands drop, and wanders away.
This = freaking adorable. Remus was trying to be the voice of reason, and Sirius just insists on being a wanker, so Remus is kind of like "Fine, you want to get killed by Snape?! Go ahead!"

As for all of this back and forth dialogue, I think Snape sums it up best:

Snape: Oh, listen to you two, quarreling like an old married couple.

*snort*
That's just...yay ^.^
Also, I included the photo because Snape's eyes shift over to Remus at this point, away from Sirius. Including him in on the statement, whereas before his eyes were fixed on Sirius, even as Remus spoke.

Harry: No, Pettigrew's dead. You [Sirius] killed him!"
Remus: No he didn't. I thought so too, until you mentioned seeing Pettigrew on the map!

Harry swings his wand to point to Sirius when he says "you killed him"; it's at this point that Remus jumps to Sirius' defense, both physically and verbally. He moves away from the piano and puts himself between Sirius and Harry, as well as continuing the explanation of Sirius' innocence.

Now, thus begins the three separate instances of Remus glancing at Sirius, or, as I like to call it:
Does David Thewlis have a crush on Gary Oldman, or is he just terrified of him (or both)?

One

Two (blurry, I know. If you watch the scene it's more obvious)

Three. This might seem like the same glance as two, but there's a cut between the two, so they're two separate glances.
It appears that whole "looking" theme is carried over from the books to the screen.

Sirius: You should have realized, Peter, that if Voldermort didn't kill you that we would. Together!

They glance at each other between "would" and "together". It's adorable.
Like the saying goes, the couple that slays together...^.^

More serious note: That glance is potentially more than just cuteness. Sirius is asserting that they're going to kill Peter, but then glances over at Remus. Upon seeing his resolve equals Sirius' own, Sirius then thrusts his wand back out, sure of his actions, and shouts "Together". I think this was a quick moment where Sirius was double-checking with Remus about his actions, seeking his approval once again. For all of Sirius' insane brashness, when Remus is around, he tends to glance toward him, defer toward him, and even obey him (we see more of that in the books than movies).

Next:
Werewolf transformation!! (aka, o shit, what's this thing called consistency?)

Before we get into me getting snarky about this scene, I'd just like to say that I freaking love how the film gets all grainy and totally looks like an old, 50s horror movie when it zooms into Remus' eye and he changes. Hats off to Cuaron (best HP director, imho).

I'm just including one screenshot for this bit, because I'm more interested in the dialogue than the pics. And they're basically all the same: Sirius is clinging to Remus and rubbing his chest and it's adorable.

Sirius: Remus, my old friend, have you taken your potion tonight?

Replace "my old friend" with "love" and that sentence is much improved.
We'll just ignore the fact that Sirius didn't know about the potion at all, shall we?

Sirius: You know the man you are inside. This heart is where you truly live! This heart, here. This flesh is only flesh!

Yeah...um...Sirius knows that isn't gonna work, right? I mean, it's sweet and all, and like, daw~, but...come on. That's stupid.

NB:
I fucking hate this werewolf design. If werewolves actually looked like that, why the hell would we need to study the "few points" distinguishing them from an actual wolf? I could recognize that thing as "not a wolf" from about 200 yards. Geeze.

Last scene:
Remus packing up, all sad and stuff. And what does he say about his lycanthropy and getting sacked?

Remus: ...and parents will not want a, um...well, someone like me...teaching their children.

Sad smile, daw. Now, it's obvious right now what's technically going on: Being a werewolf is being treated like a metaphor for gayness and/or AIDs.
Let's ignore that and act like Remus is employing a bit of double-meaning here, why don't we? Keke ^.^

Remus: Besides, people like me are um...well, let's just say I'm used to it, by now.

Interesting that Remus refused to name his condition *twice*. Hurm...referring to something else, are we, Remus?
Once again, he looks sad and resigned here. But not too terribly off. After all, he has his Siri back, doesn't he?
Speaking of which:

Remus: Didn't make any difference? Harry, it made all the difference in the world. You helped uncover the truth. You saved an innocent man from a terrible fate. It made a great deal of difference.

See that screenshot? That's Remus saying that last sentence there - practically giddy with the thought of it. Personally, I think there's an unspoken "to me" at the end of that last sentence. Just saying...

Anyway! That's it for PoA. If there are screencaps or scenes from the movie that you think help make the case, feel free to post in the comments!
